Barca’s Gerard Deulofeu targeted by Arsenal

Gerard Deulofeu

Transfer Talk: Can Gunners snare Barcelona's ‘next Lionel Messi’ while he’s still only 17?

WEEKS AFTER losing Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, Arsenal are trying to take their revenge by luring one of the Spanish club's most highly rated youngsters from the Camp Nou – 17-year-old Gerard Deulofeu.

According to Talksport the Gunners - as well as Chelsea - regard Deulofeu as the next Lionel Messi and are looking to exploit the fact that he can't sign a professional contract with Barcelona until he turns 18 in March.

Arsenal did something similar with Fabregas in 2003 when he was aged just 16, and Talksport claims that Barcelona are terrified they will lose Deulofeu in January.

The teenage striker has two years left on his existing youth contract but a clause in the deal means that he could decide to accept a big money offer from an overseas club, with Barca only liable to receive £3m. Apparently Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley watched Deulofeu star for Spain in the summer's Under-19 Championship and sent a favourable report back to Arsene Wenger.

Sky Sports News claims that England central defender Gary Cahill will sit down to discuss his future with Bolton when he returns to the club on Wednesday from international duty.

The 25-year-old, who scored England's opening goal in the 3-0 defeat of Bulgaria on Friday, admitted that the speculation of a move to Arsenal or Tottenham had got to him last week. "It was obviously a bit mentally tiring," said Cahill. "It was just a matter of me thinking of what was happening, wondering if [Bolton] were going to accept a bid or not."

In the end, Bolton's asking price deterred a serious bid. But with Cahill out of contract at the Reebok Stadium next season a deal could still happen when the transfer window reopens in January. Speaking to Sky, Bolton manager Owen Coyle said the club would discuss extending Cahill's contract "when Gary comes back... I think the owner or the chairman will have a chat with his representatives."

In other news, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic has hinted that he may be open to offers from the Premier League in the New Year. The 22-year-old Serbian international has made more than 100 appearances for the German club since joining from Mainz in 2008, but recently rumours have linked him with a big money move to either Chelsea or Manchester United.

Asked by German rag Bild if he might be on the way out of Dortmund, Subotic replied: "I will never switch clubs within Germany. If I move, it will be to a nice foreign club."

Finally, Everton centre-back Joseph Yobo has joined Fenerbahce on loan for the rest of the season. The Nigeria captain spent part of last season with the Turkish club and the 30-year-old had hoped to join them permanently. But after the Toffees and Fenerbahce couldn't agree on a fee it was decided on Monday he could move east on loan. ·
