No end to Wenger’s woes as Arsenal crash but City shine

Misery for Arsene Wenger

Premier League review: Misery for Wenger and Bruce, delight for Mancini and Warnock

Two weekend's in and the new Premier League season is well underway, unless you are a Spurs fan, in which case it has yet to start. But when Harry Redknapp's men take on Manchester United tonight then everyone will be up and running.

So far it is Manchester City that are leading the way with two wins out of two, with Wolves in hot pursuit. Things aren't going so well for Arsenal, who lost at home to Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime.

Wenger's woes keep getting worseTwo games, two red cards, no goals and only one point. Things do not look good for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger was forced to endure the boos of the home fans at the final whistle after his side were beaten 2-0 by up-and-coming Liverpool. The Arsenal boss must be wondering what he has done wrong after his side were undone by a bizarre own goal that cannoned into the goal off Aaron Ramsey's head. He also has a serious personnel problem in midfield all of a sudden. Samir Nasri is set to follow Cesc Fabregas out of the Emirates, Alex Song and Emmanuel Frimpong have bans, and Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere are injured. Perhaps now Wenger will start buying players.

DZEKO STEALS AGUERO'S LIMELIGHTA week is a long time in football... Last Monday night Manchester City's new signing Sergio Aguero was being feted to the rafters after a phenomenal debut. But he was brought down to earth with a bump at the Reebok, missing two sitters in the first half before being taken off midway through the second half. Instead it was Bosnian Edin Dzeko who took the plaudits with a fine display and a well-earned goal. The striker is virtually unrecognisable to the expensive misfit who failed to make an impression after arriving in Manchester in the January transfer window. But with his forwards lining up to make an impression Roberto Mancini must be purring with satisfaction. And Mario Balotelli hasn't even made an appearence yet this season.

NEWCASTLE BEAT SUNDERLAND YET AGAINSteve Bruce is facing the wrath of the Sunderland fans after yet another derby day defeat to Newcastle. Ryan Taylor secured the win for the visitors at the Stadium of Light with a second-half free kick. It is one thing to have a bogey team - it is quite another for that bogey team to be your hated local rivals. They say it is good luck for a Black Cat to cross your path and that certainly seems to be the case for Newcastle at the moment. On the other hand the rhyme about Magpies appears to be coming true for Sunderland - at least the part about 'one for sorrow'.

WOLVES LOOK HUNGRY FOR SUCCESSWolves are sitting pretty in second spot in the league, albeit after only two games, but their entertaining brand of football is getting them noticed this season. Last term they played some nice stuff, but still conspired to avoid relegation by a single point on the last day of the season. This time round they should be able to avoid that kind of problem, especially if the likes of Matt Jarvis and Kevin Doyle, the goal scorers against Fulham, keep on playing as they are. It was all in marked contrast to the game between the two teams last season, which was a spiteful affair that ended in acrimony and accusations from Fulham that Wolves were a dirty team. For the record it is also the first time Wolves have recorded back-to-back league wins at the start of a campaign since the 1998.

QPR DO IT THEIR OWN WAYPromoted teams are always told that the secret to staying up is performing well at home. If you win your home games then you should be safe, they say. Apparently no-one told QPR. They began their season by losing 4-0 in front of their home fans and followed that up with a trip to Goodison Park where they mugged Everton thanks to Tommy Smith's first half winner and headed back to London with all three points. Neil Warnock also has plenty of cash in his back pocket courtesy of new owner Tony Fernandes and has his eye on players like Joe Cole and Scott Parker. It's less rosy for David Moyes who has been told he has no transfer funds and will have to rely on the players who performed so badly on Saturday. Everton fans will be praying that this season doesn't go the same way as the last one, in which the Toffees had to fight their way out of relegation trouble in the spring. ·
