Man City go top as Mancini issues Nasri warning
Mancini unhappy with defending as goal-happy City beat Bolton. But where will Nasri play?
Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-2 victory away to Bolton with Wolves jumping into second place following their 2-0 defeat of Fulham.
David Silva put the Citizens in front on 26 minutes and Gareth Barry doubled the visitors' advantage on 37 minutes with a thumping drive into the top corner. Two minutes later Ivan Klasnic latched on to Martin Petrov's cross to pull one back for Bolton and that's how the score remained at the break.
But just two minutes after the restart Edin Dzeko extended City's lead to 3-1 when the Bosnian striker dispossessed Zat Knight and fired past Jussi Jaaskelainen. Though Bolton's Kevin Davies found the net with a header on 63 minutes it was the last goal of an entertaining encounter that took City to the top. Yet City boss Roberto Mancini was far from content with his side's display, saying afterwards: "It is important that the team has balance and that we don't concede a stupid goal. Both were stupid goals because in the first half we dominated the game."
Mancini also had some stern words for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, warning him that he could jeopardise the £23m transfer of Samir Nasri to City if he plays him in the Gunners Champions League qualifier against Udinese on Wednesday. If Wenger does field Nasri in his starting line then the French midfielder wouldn't be able to play for City in their Champions league campaign and that, says Mancini, could be "a big problem". The Italian added: "I hope we can have him [Nasri] in the next days but I don't know when. We still have 10 days."
Quite where Nasri would fit into City's present line-up is unclear in the light of Sunday's scintillating win. Both Silva and Dzeko were a constant danger for the SCitizens, and Gareth Barry and Sergio Aguero were also in fine form. The Argentine had two great chances to add to the brace he scored last week against Swansea but was off-target.
Wolves meanwhile joined City as the only side to collect six points from their opening two matches with a 2-0 defeat of Fulham at Molineux. Kevin Doyle gave Wolves the lead on 42 minutes and on the stroke of half-time Matt Jarvis grabbed the second. It's Wolves best start to a season for 13 years but manager Mick McCarthy warned fans not to get carried away: "The standards we have set have been very high but there are still 36 games more to play," said McCarthy, though he hastened to add: "We start bottom of the table every season due to alphabetic order so it's nice to be where we are!"
In the day's other tie Norwich looked to have secured their first win of the season after Ritchie De Laet gave them the lead on 37 minutes at home to Stoke, but then up popped Kenwyne Jones in injury time to head home the equaliser and give the visitors a share of the points. ·
