‘I’m the not-so-special one’ says Chelsea’s Villas-Boas
New Chelsea manager says success is not down to one man, but knows what Abramovich expects
New Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has arrived at Stamford Bridge in a rather more down-beat manner than his mentor and former Blues boss Jose Mourinho, insisting that he is no "one-man show" and that success must be based on relationships.
The 33-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the west London club after Chelsea paid a £13.3m release fee to his former employers Porto.
In his first season in charge of the Portuguese club he established himself as the hottest manager in Europe. His side did not lose a league game all season, won the league and cup double and capped it off by winning the Europa League.
However, Villas-Boas does not appear to think that he is that special.
"Don't expect something from one man," he told Chelsea TV in his first interview since signing up at Stamford Bridge. "I was appointed for human qualities," he explained. "I don't see the game as a one-man show, I see the game as the getting together of collective ideas and good players. The most important thing is to motivate the players to get their ambitions right."
His comments are in stark contrast to those made by Mourinho in 2004 when he breezed into Stamford Bridge and declared himself to be the "Special One". As one of his assistants during his three year reign Villas-Boas was able to watch as Mourinho built up a cult of personality and guided the Blues to two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and two League Cups in three seasons.
His close association with the current Real Madrid manager earned Villas-Boas the nickname mini-Mourinho, although his teams, so far, have played with a more attacking style that those of his mentor.
That entertaining brand of football will please the Chelsea fans and owner Roman Abramovich, although, having been on the staff at Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas will know that Abramovich will not settle for anything less victory in the Champions League. ·
