Arsenal set to sign Yann M'Vila as Bayern pull out
Arsenal to land Rennes midfielder but face fight Chelsea for Hatem Ben Arfa, Man Utd after Rodriguez
ARSENAL are closing in on their third signing of the summer. Having already secured Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud, Arsenal are set to make it a hat-trick after the agent of Yann M'Vila said Bayern Munich have called off the chase for the Rennes midfielder.
The German powerhouse was the Gunners' only serious competition for the hand of M'Vila (despite his agent's hopes of getting Inter Milan to make an offer) but it now appears they've thought better than taking on Arsenal in a bidding war. Speaking to the French press, most of whom were in need of some idle gossip to take their minds off Les Bleus' humiliating defeat at the hands of Sweden, M'Vila's agent Werner Baader admitted: "We had contact with Bayern Munich over Yann M'Vila [but] he is not the kind of player they are looking for at Bayern. They are looking for someone in this position, but they want somebody with different abilities."
Baader didn't elaborate on what those "different abilities" might be, leaving some to speculate that Bayern simply came to the conclusion that they can't offer M'Vila what Arsenal can: namely, an empty trophy cabinet.
What news of Robin van Persie today? Well, it seems that he is off... Off to Asia with the rest of the Gunners on their pre-season tour after the failure of the Dutch squad to progress beyond the group stages of Euro 2012.
The Daily Mail reports that the striker, who is rumoured to be wanted by Manchester City and Juventus, is expected back at Arsenal in the second week of July and will join his team mates in Malaysia, China and Hong Kong later that month, unlike other Arsenal players who make it through to the knock-out stages of the tournament. Arsene Wenger is convinced that Van Persie will still be with the club next season even though he has yet to sign a new contract. However, no other club is thought to have made an official offer for the player.
Arsenal and Chelsea are going head to head in the race to sign Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa. The Daily Mirror reports that the 25-year-old Frenchman, currently with Les Bleus in the European Championships, has "welcomed the interest" from both clubs such is his desire to play in the Champions League.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is out in the Ukraine as a co-commentator for French television and the Nutty Professsor has reportedly been keeping a close eye on Ben Arfa, who joined Newcastle from Marseille in 2010.
Chelsea have been linked with the Frenchman for several months but now that they have purchased Eden Hazard and Marko Marin it may be that Ben Arfa feels he'd get more game time with the Gunners.
In other news the agent of Javi Garcia has told Manchester City that they have as much chance of signing his client as Jimmy Carr has of ever being taken seriously again. The Sky Blues have long been linked to the 25-year-old Garcia, a midfielder with a burgeoning reputation, but in an interview with Portuguese rag A Bola, Manuel García Quillon said: "I have had no proposal from England about Javi. He renewed with Benfica and we have nothing more to say."
Pressed on whether Garcia could leave Benfica if City come in with an obscene amount of money, Quillon said: "He will continue at Benfica."
Another Portuguese sensation linked with a move to Manchester is Porto winger James Rodriguez. According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are keeping tabs on him and some media reports even claim Fergie has already had an offer rejected by his club. It is not known how much United are prepared to pay for the 20-year-old, but it is unlikely to be enough to trigger his release clause, which is said to stand at £40m. According to the player's agent the situation is "very complex"
One deal signed, sealed and delivered concerns Wigan star Mohamed Diame. The Senegal international was mooted as a possible Liverpool target earlier in the month but the 25-year-old midfielder clearly has his sights set on bigger things, hence his decision to join West Ham United. The Hammers' official website announced the three-year deal and manager Sam Allardyce said of Diame: "He will be a very exciting addition to the squad."
England goalkeeper Rob Green has sealed his switch from West Ham to QPR. The stopper is currently with Roy Hodgson's squad and will officially become a Rangers player on July 1.
Elsewhere Talksport claim that Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata is in demand among a trio of Premier League clubs. Apparently Liverpool, QPR and Newcastle are all hot on the heels of the 19-year-old after the teenage sensation was told he didn't have a future at the Bernabeu.
Talksport say that the Spanish Under-19 regular has instructed his agent to "offer him around English clubs", and it is believed QPR are front of the queue and have let it be known they'll happily pay him £30,000-a-week if he promises to keep them in the Premier League. ·
