Rio Ferdinand and Fabio Capello: friends again

Rio Ferdinand John Terry

Defender and England manager put an end to March’s captaincy row with a chat and a handshake

Rio Ferdinand and Fabio Capello appear to have patched up their differences with a handshake at England's traning camp ahead of Saturday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland.

Back in March, Capello controversially stripped Ferdinand of the England armband, reinstalling John Terry (above, with Ferdinand) as captain of the national team after a year in disgrace following the Vanessa Perroncel scandal. While the Italian may have had some justification for the switch – Ferdinand's persistent injury problems meant he had led the national side in just four out of the previous 15 games – his blundered communication of the decision drew wide criticism from pundits and ex-players.

At the time, Ferdinand was said to be "very upset" by the decision, deliberately spurning Capello's invitations to meet face to face. Yet after a sit-down chat at England's training camp on Monday evening, the two men were said to have put aside their differences.

United's central defender expressed his disappointment about losing the captaincy. Capello, in turn, explained his justification for the change. The new found harmony was reportedly sealed with a handshake and an agreement to let bygones be bygones.

Any sign of lingering resentment certainly wasn't visible on Ferdinand's face as he smirked and larked about with his fellow countrymen on England's training pitch on Tuesday. ·
