Wenger to begin Arsenal spree with bid for Cahill
Transfer Talk: ‘I will be very active’ pledges Wenger when asked about summer spending plans
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has moved to stave off the growing discontent among Gunners fans with a promise to embark on a summer spending spree. The nutty professor has presided over a humiliating slump in form this year, with Arsenal winning just two of their final 13 games in all competitions this season, and now the Frenchman has finally accepted that the club has to invest in new blood if they're not to become as ridiculous as a high court injunction.
In an interview with Telefoot, Wenger said that the imposition next season of the Uefa's fair play rules governing transfers and club finances means "the market will be very active [in June]... so we will be doing the last buying before the stores close... I have enough experience to know that the club is in a healthy position financially and we have got the basis of the team - but we know we want to be stronger next year. For the first time in a while, I will be very active."
And it seems that one of Wenger's first acquisitions could be Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill. The 26-year-old England defender has attracted interest this season from Arsenal as well as Chelsea and Liverpool, and in an interview with Sky Sports, Bolton boss Owen Coyle hinted he might sell the player if the price is right. Asked if offloading Cahill was on the agenda next month Coyle replied: "If somebody comes in and its good business for the football club then it's something we have to look at... ultimately you have to be fair with the player as well [and] we have to make sure that we've got targets lined up that can come in, replace whoever it is and look to take the club on and improve it."
However, it seems that Belgian sensation Eden Hazard – who on Sunday night won the French league's Player of the Year award – definitely won't be going to the Emirates or any other club next season. The 20-year-old striker is arguably the most exciting young prospect in Europe right now but according to Talksport he has decided to pledge his loyalty to Lille, who were crowned French champions on Saturday. Talksport quotes a Lille source as saying: "Eden has chosen to stay. He has a contract until 2015 and now Champions League football. Everything points towards staying."
Could Saturday's Champions League final against Barcelona be Nani's last appearance in a Manchester United shirt? According to reports filtering out of Italy, the Portuguese winger is being targeted by Juventus with £27m believed to be what they're prepared to offer United. Apparently Juve coach Antonio Conte sees the 24-year-old as the player to put the spark back into the Turin club and a bid will be formally put to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens. Whether Alex Ferguson would let Nani go for such a sum is uncertain; though the twinkle-toed winger has scored 10 goals in United's triumphant march to the Premier League title, he's increasingly playing second fiddle to Antonio Valencia and Ferguson might decide to cash in on the Portuguese star.
The Metro newspaper reports that Manchester City might have just enjoyed their most successful season for decades but that still wasn't enough to convince Udinese to part with Alexis Sanchez. The 22-year-old Chilean striker has been tearing up Serie A this season with his goalscoring antics and a host of clubs have been chasing his signature. Club president Giampaolo Pozzo said on Monday: "We have received an offer of €35m that we rejected. I do not want to name the club, out of respect... [but] we'd like him to stay for another year, plus we believe he's worth more than €35m." But Metro says the club in question is none other than the Citizens, who failed in their bid to buy Sanchez despite finishing third in the Premier League and winning the FA Cup.
Finally, the Sun says that Liverpool may have lost out to Spurs for fifth spot and a place in next season's Europa League, but the Reds are confident of beating the Lilywhites in the race to sign Aston Villa keeper Brad Friedel. The 40-year-old American gloveman is available on a free now his Villa Park contract has expired and the Sun claims Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is determined to bring him back to Anfield 11 years after he left Merseyside for Blackburn. ·
