Carlos Tevez wants to stay in England. Anyone interested?
Spurs and Arsenal might be tempted - but can they really afford the price ticket?
AS BOMBSHELLS go, they don't burst any bigger than the one fired on Tuesday by the agent of Carlos Tevez. According to Kia Joorabchian, the stroppy South American striker is "open to Spurs or Arsenal". Joorabchian says Tevez is settled in England, adding: "He'd be happy to move to another Premier League club."
According to the Metro, both the Gunners and Tottenham are interested in the 27-year-old Argentine. Harry Redknapp has in the past spoken highly of Tevez and admitted he would have no qualms about signing him despite his disciplinary problems at Manchester City. The hurdle to surmount is the cost and the paper quotes Redknapp as saying: "Affording him is a different matter. That's the problem."
Arsene Wenger would also have difficulty in stumping up the sort of cash needed to lure Tevez to the Emirates, but the Metro says the Arsenal boss is desperate to sign another world-class striker "to relieve the pressure on Robin van Persie". As the Gunners showed in their drab goalless draw with Marseille on Tuesday night, when the Dutchman isn't in the starting line-up they struggle to put the ball in the net.
Elsewhere goal.com claims that the Gunners are preparing to make a New Year bid for Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero. Rumours of a possible offer emerged last week and, according to goal.com, a delegation from the Emirates flew to the Spanish capital a few days ago "to begin negotiations".
Wenger sees the 24-year-old Granero as a perfect replacement for Jack Wilshere – out injured until the spring – but the nutty professor might have to go head to head with Malaga if he wants to land his man. Real are said to value Granero at around £6m but are keeping their fingers crossed for a bidding war between the Gunners and Malaga.
Still with Real Madrid and Talksport reports that Manchester United are hopeful of signing winger Angel Di Maria when January's transfer window opens. The Argentine ace is a favourite of Alex Ferguson who wanted to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford last summer.
That never happened but now Talksport's sources in Argentina say that Madrid are increasingly tempted to sell Di Maria after his patchy form so far this season. Despite his inconsistency, however, Real are still said to want £25m for the man capped 27 times by his country.
And as we started on a bombshell it seems only appropriate that we end on a bombshell – this one concerning Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic. According to Italian press agency Novosti, Inter Milan see the Balkans blocker as just the sort of no-nonsense defender to galvanise the club after their woeful start to the season.
Inter are currently languishing in 17th spot in Serie A and as a result manager Claudio Ranieri is drawing up a list of possible reinforcements to sign in the New Year. Top of his list apparently is the 30-year-old Vidic, although quite what Inter would be prepared to pay for the Serbian isn't known.
It would have to be a lot because Vidic has proved a rock in the United back four and with Rio Ferdinand past his sell-by date, Alex Ferguson would expect in the region of £25m for Vidic. ·
