Arsenal get their hopes up for Cologne striker Lukas Podolski

Gunners prepare to make an offer after German international scores both goals in Sunday game

JUST a day after Arsenal appeared to have lost out in their bid to sign Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund, another German ace has hinted that he might be more amenable to a move to the Emirates. Cologne striker Lukas Podolski, who scored both his side’s goals in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Stuttgart, has been watched by Arsene Wenger’s scouts in recent weeks and is expected to receive a formal offer from Arsenal next month.

Speaking to broadcaster ZDF Television, the 26-year-old German international said: "I am getting plenty of offers and I expect more of them to arrive to me, to my agent or to my club in the coming weeks."

He said he was obliged to listen to what his present employers had to offer - "I will talk to Cologne before anybody else and see what they have to say" - but a New Year signing at the Emirates looks to be on the cards.

Meanwhile Arsenal’s attempt to sign Marseille playmaker Andre Ayew seems to have run into a spot of trouble thanks to some meddling from another Bundesliga outfit – Bayern Munich.

According to Talksport, the German giants are also interested in signing the Ghana international next month and Marseille are gearing up for "a winter bidding war" over the 21-year-old. Ayew was initially valued at £10m, but the French club will be hoping Bayern and Arsenal drive up his price in their desperation to land the twinkle-toed African magician.

Elsewhere the Metro says that AC Milan will offer Manchester City Alexandre Pato in return for Carlos Tevez. Strange as it may seem, the Italian club believe the stroppy South American striker is not beyond redemption and want to take him on loan in January. With Antonio Cassano out injured until next season, Milan are in need of a world-class finisher and believe Tevez fits the bill.

In the past City have refused to countenance anything other than a permanent deal for the Argentine but the Metro says they may be persuaded to agree to Milan’s terms in return for getting their hands on Brazilian frontman Pato. Apparently City boss Roberto Mancini is a big fan of the 22-year-old Pato despite the fact he’s struggled for form this season at the San Siro.

Finally, the Daily Mail says that Tottenham will swoop for Bolton defender Gary Cahill in January after receiving an offer from Lokomotiv Moscow for Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko. With Lokomotiv apparently ready to pay the Lilywhites £8m for Pavlyuchenko, that will enable Spurs to make an irresistible offer for Cahill who, ironically, was sent off against them at the weekend.

Chelsea and Arsenal have also been monitoring Cahill for several months but the Mail says Harry Redknapp is cautiously optimistic that the 25-year-old England star will sign for Spurs. ·
