Arsenal and PSG vie for CSKA Moscow star Keisuke Honda
As Gunners seek added thrust, Man City look set to dump stroppy Carlos Tevez at last
A MONTH after the French started a war of words with Britain over the European economy, it all looks set to kick off again between the two countries with Japanese ace Keisuke Honda the cause of the latest outbreak of hostility.
According to the respected Japanese paper Sport Nippon, the 25-year-old Honda is being chased by Paris Saint Germain and Arsenal. Reports suggest that PSG have already tabled a bid of £11m for the international playmaker, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be determined to bring the star to the Emirates.
With the return of Thierry Henry on a loan deal, the Gunners have already added some va-va-voom to their squad and the capture of Honda would provide them with some further thrust.
Wenger has been tailing the CSKA Moscow midfielder ever since he helped Japan reach the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup and apparently the nutty professor had an offer knocked back by the Russian club in last summer's transfer window. PSG's interest is believed to be genuine and it's understood CSKA are open to offers now that Honda has just over a year left on his contract.
One of football's longest running sagas might be nearing a climax after reports surfaced that both AC Milan and Inter are in talks with Manchester City over the acquisition of argumentative Argentine ace Carlos Tevez.
The stroppy South American hasn't played for the Sky Blues ever since he had a touchline tantrum in September and according to goal.com he could soon be making a fresh start in Serie A. Apparently both Milan clubs are in talks with officials from City and a deal looks likely with one or the other this month.
The Metro reckons that Inter are favourites to land Tevez because Dutch ace Wesley Sneijder will "be dangled as bait". The midfield maestro was rumoured to be a target of Manchester United last summer but nothing transpired and now the Metro is claiming that Inter will give City Sneijder in return for Tevez.
In other news Talksport reports that Ajax are trying to lure Chelsea into a bidding war with Valencia for their defender Gregory van der Wiel.
With Chelsea's defence this season proving as clumsy as a Diane Abbot tweet, coach Andre Villas-Boas is in desperate need of some cool heads and apparently he's identified the 23-year-old Van der Wiel as fitting the bill. Talksport quotes the right-back's agent - Hakim Slimani - as saying: "It would be good if the situation is clarified quickly so Gregory could concentrate completely on his last season at Ajax."
Finally, with rumours suggesting that the recent gale-force winds in Britain had their origin in Old Trafford following back-to-back defeats for Manchester United, the Daily Mail claims that Alex Ferguson is considering a "sensational move" for Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.
Ferguson has given his side the hairdryer treatment after watching them go down to Blackburn and Newcastle and apparently he now sees the 33-year-old Lampard as the solution to United's problems. However the Mail points out that though Ferguson might be an admirer of the England playmaker, the United board will take some convincing that the club should pay £140,000 a week to a player at the fag end of his career. ·
