Bleak news for Arsenal fans: Theo Walcott wants to stay
With Juventus no longer interested, inconsistent winger wants £100,000 a week and bonuses
AS IF Arsenal fans weren't depressed enough, now comes more dispiriting news that Theo Walcott is keen to stay at the club. Apparently the 22-year-old winger is ready to sit down with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger to discuss extending his contract which expires in the summer of 2013.
The Metro claims that Walcott is "happy at the Emirates", which is more than can be said about Arsenal fans who have long since tired of the England player's inconsistent performances. Yet despite six years of under-achievement Walcott is asking Arsenal for a new wage structure worth £100,000-a-week, plus "clarification over bonus and image clauses" that could earn the wasteful winger as much as £5m a year.
Earlier in the season Walcott was linked with a possible move to Juventus but perhaps the Italian club have since seen him in action.
Meanwhile Chelsea target Willian has revealed that at one stage he thought he was on the brink of sealing a move to Arsenal. The Brazilian frontman is wanted by the Blues and the Metro reports that they will sit down with Ukrainian side Shaktar this week in the hope of agreeing terms.
Chelsea's initial offer of £16m was rejected and Shaktar chief executive Sergei Palkin has told the club they want £29m. As for Willian, he said: "There was talk about Barcelona and Arsenal before but now Chelsea are interested. If the next step of the adventure is England, then I would be excited by that." Why the move to Arsenal fell through is unknown.
Still with Chelsea and Talksport reports that they have run into a brick wall as far as signing Lucas goes. The Blues had offered Sao Paulo in the region of £30m for the 19-year-old but were dumbstruck when the Brazilian club said they could have the teenager striker if they stumped up a whopping £60m. That was too much even for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, a man not known for his parsimony.
The Brazilian club, mindful of the growing interest in Lucas, has now placed an astonishing £66m price tag on him. Speaking to Inter News, Lucas's agent Wagner Ribeiro said: "The club's clause is £60m and this greatly influences the offers they receive. They do not want to sell and they rejected an offer from Chelsea for £29m."
In other news, Queens Park Rangers look to have lost out on signing Chelsea defender Alex because he'd rather move to Paris Saint Germain. Sky Sports reports that talks have already started between the Brazilian blocker and the French outfit. Alex's agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, said: "At the current stage, it is only talks, but they have started well. Alex has a big desire to join PSG."
Finally Blackburn Rovers' brassed-off star Chris Samba has told The Sun that he wants out of Ewood Park. In recent weeks Spurs have been linked with a move for the strapping centre-back but when Samba handed in a transfer request last week he was told where he could shove it.
Now Samba has made a final plea to leave, telling the Sun: "Blackburn need players who are 100 per cent for the club, and I'm not. The only way to solve this is for them to let me go. It will be very difficult for me to play for this team again." ·
