Arsenal 'ready to pay £20m' to land striker Stevan Jovetic
Wenger said to be prepared to break club transfer record to get Fiorentina and Montenegro forward
THE MAN they call the 'Montenegro marksman' is rumoured to be a step closer to joining Arsenal in the summer. According to the Metro, Stevan Jovetic is top of the Gunners' wish-list with Arsene Wenger said to be willing to pay £20 million to sign him from Serie A side Fiorentina.
Jovetic lines up against England in next week's crucial World Cup qualifier and Arsenal scouts will be present to run the rule over the 23-year-old as he looks to tear the Three Lions' defence to shreds.
The Metro says that although Manchester City and Juventus are also tracking the strapping 6ft striker, Wenger is prepared to break the club's previous transfer record - the £15 million handed to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin – in order to bring Jovetic to the Emirates to sharpen the Arsenal frontline.
Sky Sports reports that Arsenal goalkeeer Wojciech Szczesny has vowed to bounce back from the slump in form that has seen the 22-year-old Poland international axed in favour of Lukasz Fabianski in the Gunners' last two games.
As we reported yesterday, Arsenal are being linked with a move for Swansea shotstopper Michael Vorm in the summer but Szczesny has told Sky he intends to tough it out at the Emirates. "I am too happy to go somewhere else," he said. "I have a debt to pay here for the club, I owe them."
Whether he was speaking figuratively or whether he's had to ask the Arsenal board to lend him a few quid to tide him over till the end of the season wasn't clear but Szczesny was quick to add: "I just do not want to go anywhere else. As long as they want me here, there is no 'somewhere else', and I have a contract until June 2015."
But what will Szczesny's reaction be when he sees the report in today's Daily Mail suggesting Arsenal are keeping tabs on Chelsea keeper Petr Cech? The Czech "has been watched extensively by Gunners scouts" in recent weeks and apparently Arsenal believe Chelsea might be prepared to let Cech go if the price is right.
The Mail admits such a move would be one of the most "unexpected transfers in recent memory" but claims that the young gloveman Thibault Courtois may replace Cech at the Bridge next season.
Talksport reports that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has told Manchester City and Chelsea that only a "crazy" offer would be enough to win them the hand of Edinson Cavani. The on-fire striker is being hunted down by the Premier League pair after bagging 69 goals in 96 Serie A appearances since joining Napoli three seasons ago.
But De Laurentiis has warned that they would only part with the 26-year-old Uruguayan if £60 million was deposited in their account. "With his contract's clause we set a very high mark because we want him to stay here," De Laurentiis is quoted as saying. "But if we received a crazy €70 million [£60m] offer, which would mean a €63 million net for our club, we would listen to it - although the final decision is up to the player."
Finally, Caughtoffside claims that Manchester United are poised to make a move for Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian midfielder has been in superb form for Everton this season and apparently United scouts were present at Goodison Park on Saturday as Fellaini helped the Toffees inflict a 2-0 defeat on Manchester City.
Fellaini has made no secret of his desire to join one of the Premier League's elite clubs and Caughtoffside is adamant it will be United who swoop for the 25-year-old. ·
