Arsenal 'agree' Higuain deal, but will Fabregas join Man Utd?
Arsenal close in on strikers, with Jovetic also poised to move, as Fabregas emerges as shock United target
PERHAPS those rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Wayne Rooney weren't true after all... because it seems the Gunners have agreed a deal for a rather more plausible target, Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, who has reportedly been on Arsene Wenger's radar for some time.
According to the Spanish website Sport.es, the 25-year-old Argentine hitman is on the verge of a £18.5m move to the Emirates, with a five-year deal already in place.
However, the website suggests that the move hinges on Arsenal scraping into the Champions League, and if they fail then Higuain could turn his back on the Gunners and start fluttering his eyelids in the direction of Spurs.
The Argentina striker, who arrived in Spain from River Plate in 2007, has been linked with a move to both Arsenal and Spurs in the past, and appears determined to leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season after losing his place in the starting line-up to French international Karim Benzema.
Meanwhile, the rumours linking Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic to Arsenal have been strengthened after one of the club's former players revealed that he thought the forward would jump ship this summer. Italian website Tuttomercato quotes Daniele Amerini as saying that the 23-year-old Montenegrin would leave the club but added that he did not think he was worth the £25m valuation placed on him by the club.
Whether or not Amerini's opinions carry any weight is unclear, but the news will go down well in certain parts of north London.
While Wenger may be closer to solving his striking dilemma, it appears that his problems in the goalkeeping department rumble on. The Arsenal manager has been linked to almost every goalkeeper in Europe since apparently losing faith in current stopper Wojciech Szczesny. Last week it appeared that the nutty professor had decided that QPR keeper Julio Cesar was the man for him, but now Talksport claims that Arsenal have had an £8.5m offer for Rui Patricio of Sporting Lisbon turned down.
Portuguese international Patricio has been Sporting's number one gloveman since 2008, but with the club in danger of missing out on Europe it is thought he could be tempted away. However, Talksport says his employers want £12.5m from the Gunners.
Over at Manchester United there is talk that new manager David Moyes intends to announce his arrival at Old Trafford in dramatic style, by raiding Barcelona for ex-Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
The Evening Standard claims that United have launched a "stunning" bid to sign the midfielder as a replacement for Paul Scholes, and are continuing to negotiate with Real Madrid over the possible re-signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Standard warns that the Gunners could scupper United's move for Fabregas, as it has been reported that there is a clause in his contract that gives Arsenal first refusal on the player if Barcelona do decide to offload him. ·
