No Time Left: a gut-wrenching finale to The Walking Dead

Episode 5 brings the hit zombie apocalypse video game to a brilliant conclusion

What you need to know
The fifth instalment of the episodic role-playing zombie video game The Walking Dead has been released in the UK. Developed by Telltale, it is based on a comic book series by Robert Kirkman, which has also been turned into a popular cable television series in the US.

Episode 5: No Time Left continues the story of central character, Lee Everett, a former teacher and escaped prisoner, who is tasked with protecting a girl named Clementine in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. In Episode 5, Lee has been bitten by a zombie 'walker', and must prepare to save Clementine from himself.

Players take on the role of Lee, and also get to make choices which alter key elements of the plot.

What the critics like
This is the emotional finale fans deserve, says Greg Miller on IGN. Episode 5 hurtles along, and "the truly unexpected lies around every corner". There's also "fantastic voiceover work from the cast and some beautiful graphic novel-like art".

The Walking Dead has gone from strength to strength, proving the power of a good script, says Sam White on Videogamer. Episode 5 is a brilliant emotional conclusion that "feels like a proper ending".

It would be madness not to play this episode if you've enjoyed the other four, says David Jenkins in Metro. The finale is brutal and emotional and the last scenes with Lee and Clementine "are gut-wrenchingly effective".

What they don't like
It's a shame that The Walking Dead only half-realises many of its more interesting ideas, says Oli Welsh on Eurogamer. This game is a serious, solid, but clay-footed work, though Episode 5's conclusion has "rare sensitivity and tremendous power".
