'All killer no filler' - Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Latest Metal Gear game from Japan is a must for fans of Samurai-style melee combat

What you need to know
The action video game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is released in the UK this week. It's the ninth game in the Metal Gear series from Japanese developers Platinum Games and Kojima Productions.

The story focuses on a cyborg ninja called Raiden, who battles against a private military company known as Desperado Enterprises. While previous titles in the Metal Gear series used stealth techniques to avoid enemies, Rising is focused on action.

Gameplay is mainly katana (Samurai-style) sword-fighting, but includes some stealth techniques to gather reconnaissance.

What the critics like
Two of Japan's most talented developers have created "one of the best action games of the generation", says David Jenkins in the Metro. It has one of the best combat systems ever in an action game, as well as "wonderfully over-the-top enemies".

Metal Gear Rising is "rowdy, animated and exhaustingly vigorous", says Simon Parkin in The Guardian. It's a funfair ride that retains the game's stealth elements "but actively encourages players to rush in, katana blazing".

This game is a must for anyone who appreciates melee-combat, says Mitch Dyer on IGN. Simple, fast, and clean, Rising is "all killer, no filler, with more than enough incentive for repeat play-throughs".

What they don't like
It's a "stylish but flawed" hack and slash adventure, says Ashton Raze in the Daily Telegraph. It's fun and great to look at, but it's "difficult to try and parry each enemy attack" when half the time the camera can't keep up with where they are.
