Gangnam Style, Skyfall and iPad 3 on Google Zeitgeist list
But the annual survey of trending search topics reveals that we still love football more than the Olympics
THE TOP Google search terms of 2012 have been revealed by the search giant in its annual Zeitgeist survey of Britain, and among the winners this year are Kate Middleton, the iPad 3 and South Korean dance craze Gangnam Style.
The charts reveal not only the most popular but also the fastest-growing search terms. The results give "a snapshot of the stories and trends that have captured the nation's imagination," explains The Times.
Here are some of the main findings:
Top trending UK search term: Proving the nation's devotion to football, 'Euro 2012' beat 'Olympic tickets' into second place. 'Natwest online' appears on the list after the banks internet service crashed in July as does the name ‘April Jones’ following her disappearance in Wales in October.
Top trending person: Whitney Houston, who died in February, was the top trending person, ahead of Kate Middleton, X-Factor judges Gary Barlow and Tulisa and Olympic athlete Jessica Ennis.
Top trending news stories: Hurricane Sandy, Eurovision 2012 and Felix Baumgartner's epic parachute jump from space all feature strongly.
Top trending British Olympians: Andy Murray came top and can thank the fact that tennis goes on for most of the year, not just three weeks. He is followed by Tom Daley, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis and Victoria Pendleton. BBC Sports Personality of the Year favourite Bradley Wiggins is down in sixth spot.
Top trending global Olympians: Usain Bolt came top ahead of swimmer Michael Phelps and tennis champ Roger Federer.
Top trending sports terms: Synchronised swimming and murderball (which was played at the Paralympics) featured strongly thanks to their sudden increase in profile because of London 2012.
Top trending politicos: Jeremy Hunt came top of the list of UK politicians thanks to his involvement in the Leveson inquiry, ahead of Boris Johnson. The three main party leaders were nowhere to be seen.
Top trending entertainment: Animated children's programme Mike The Knight headed the TV list. Skyfall beat Prometheus to top spot in the movie charts. Gangnam Style was, unsurprisingly, the top trending song of 2012.
