Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet revealed in LA

The wraps have come off Mercedes-Maybach's limited-edition S 650, the brand's first cabriolet, at the 2016 Los Angeles motor show.

The S 650 Cabriolet is based on the open top Mercedes S-Class, retaining the car's proportions and using the same 621bhp, 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 engine from the S65 AMG. This launches the Mercedes-Maybach from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.

External differences from the regular S-Class include 20-inch forged wheels, a new front bumper with chrome highlights and Maybach logos projected onto the ground upon opening the doors. Mercedes says it has only placed Maybach logos in discrete places, such as the wings and boot lid.

Inside, the S 650 Cabriolet is similar to the 2013 S-Class Coupe concept. Mercedes says it has included 'waterfall-like' weaving lines on the seat upholstery and dashboard. The company also "throws in a luggage set comprising of four bags made from the same leather used in the S 650's interior", says Carbuyer.

Priced at €300,000 (about £256,000) and limited to just 300 units, the S 650 Cabriolet is expected to arrive in the spring of 2017. It's closest rival will be the Rolls-Royce Dawn, "the best" in its class, says Auto Express, and a car that "manages to mix luxury with surprisingly adept driving manners".
