Tardy Beyonce booed by fans at soggy V Festival
Pop princess leaves crowds waiting in rain while fans at home miss out on television footage
BEYONCE'S first appearance at a British festival this summer got off to a bad start. The pop princess was booed at the V Festival on Saturday after she left crowds in Chelmsford, Essex waiting more than 20 minutes in the pouring rain.
This was followed by a technical glitch, with one angry fan telling the Metro: "The sound was so terrible people were just walking away halfway through her set."
Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Helen Brown wonders if the delay was caused by Beyonce's indecision over her new hair-do. "Rumour had it, she was so nervous about appearing lock-shorn before her fans that she'd packed 40 hairpieces, in case she wigged out at the last minute," says Brown.
With "heavy drizzle streaking the fake bakes of the girls in their daisy dukes", pockets of booing broke out, says Brown. "We didn't care about the hair: we wanted the hits."
When the pop superstar eventually did emerge, the sound was being "whipped in as many directions as her much-discussed blonde bob", says Lisa Verrico in The Times.
Fans hoping to watch Beyonce's performance from the comfort of their own homes were disappointed too, after her set was pulled from Channel 4's broadcast at the last minute. Presenters Edith Bowman and Steve Jones suggested she had refused to clear her performance for the broadcast, sparking an angry backlash on Twitter from fans claiming they felt "cheated".
Verrico suggests Beyonce banned the broadcast because it might impact on the DVD sales from her Mrs Carter tour – which had close similarities to her V Festival performance. "In that sense, B at V could be accused of short-changing fans," says Verrico.
Nevertheless, once V's sound system got to grips with the weather, critics were in agreement that Beyonce delivered a spectacular performance.
Beyonce and her "exceptional" band were "a cut above the rest", concludes Brown, while Verrico says that for the most part Beyonce "took on the weather and won". ·
