Lady Gaga the big winner at MTV Europe awards

Streaker upstages actress Hayden Panettiere as the EMAs come to Belfast

IT'S KNOWN as the more relaxed version of the American show, but even Hayden Panettiere looked a bit shocked when a streaker interrupted her speech during the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Belfast last night.

But as the Daily Mail reports, most commentators concluded that it was just another stunt designed to spice up the awards ceremony, much like Britney and Madonna's surprise "kiss" in 2003.

Lady Gaga was the big winner of the night with four awards including best female and best song and video for Born This Way. The American singer's outfits, often a source of controversy, consisted of a series of metallic discs and cones (pictured above) that made it impossible for Panettiere to hug her properly as she presented her with the best song award.

Actor David Hasselhoff couldn't even work out how to give 25-year-old Gaga the trophy for best female: "I was trying to find her hand but I ended up having to hold the award," the BBC reported him as saying.

Other winners included teen sensation Justin Bieber, who scooped best male and best pop act, and R&B singer Bruno Mars, who turned up with his band all wearing matching pink jackets. Pink-haired Katy Perry had four nominations, but came away with only one award for best live act.

Belfast is the smallest city yet to have held the multi-million pound EMA event, the fruit of over 10 years of negotiations between organisers and the council. Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, who is Northern Irish, said it was fantastic for the country to be in the news for something good, as "very often Northern Ireland in the past has been in the news for other reasons". ·
