Will Usain Bolt and Phillips Idowu be fit for the Olympics?

Superstar Jamaican trains behind closed doors and coach fears for Idowu

USAIN BOLT failed to appear at an open training session for the Jamaican team on Tuesday, raising concerns that the superstar sprinter may not be fully fit to defend his Olympic titles while there are now serious doubts about the fitness of one of Britain's best medal hopes, triple jumper Phillips Idowu.

Bolt, who was beaten by rival Yohan Blake over both 100m and 200m at the Jamaican Olympic trials, has been dogged by rumours of hamstring problems this season, and was absent from the public training session in Birmingham.

Also missing were the other two members of Jamaica's high-profile sprint trio, Blake and Asafa Powell, who have been tipped for a clean sweep at London. However, it was Bolt who dominated the headlines and, according to the Daily Mail, "attempts by officials to ease concerns about the double world-record holder were less than convincing".

But former 200m world record holder Michael Johnson said that Bolt's travails would be good news for the Games. "We're going to be treated to an incredible showdown and it's primarily because Usain Bolt is not at his best," he said.

Unsurprisingly, Bolt and the rest of the Jamaican team insist that all is well. "This will be the moment, and this will be the year, when I set myself apart from other athletes in the world," Bolt told The Guardian earlier this week.

However, things look a lot less rosy for Idowu according to The Daily Telegraph, which says his coach does not believe he will not be fit for the Games. "The problem relates to a trapped nerve that runs from the back of Idowu's left knee, up through his hamstring and into his left hip," reports the paper.

The Hackney-born jumper has also said he is "incredibly disappointed" that the British Olympic Association publicly demanded to see his medical records after he opted not to travel with the rest of the team to a training camp in Portugal.
