Gideon Gono may be victim of a plot to wrest power from a frail Mugabe
The governor of the Zimbabwe central bank has gone into hiding amid accusations that he has been having an affair with President Mugabe’s wife Grace for the past five years.
Gideon Gono fears for his life now that allegations of infidelity have resurfaced, 18 months after they were first revealed to Mugabe by his dying sister Sabina.
"His life is in danger, it is as simple as that," a political analyst told the Times. "The danger for him is that Mugabe's goons will now act as they think he would like."
The recent charges against Gono, who was made head of the central bank by Mugabe in 2003, are the latest manoeuvres in a bitter power struggle within the ruling Zanu (PF) party.
Insiders claim it is both an attempt to derail Grace's position of power in a post-Mugabe regime and to neutralise Gono, who has an intimate knowledge of the money trails and past villainy of the government elite.
A source said: "Gono knows where all the bodies are buried, but he has no power base himself. Mugabe and others wanted to ditch him. Rumours of this affair have been around a long time - why do they come out now?"
Gono was revealed to have raised the money behind Grace's infamous spending trips in the fashion houses of London and Paris, where it has been reported that she spent £75,000 in two hours on designer clothes.
Under Gono’s leadership, the central bank of Zimbabwe created the policies which led to crippling hyperinflation and forced the country to suspend the Zimbabwean dollar. ·

How long before this persecuted adulterer surfaces as an asylum seeker in Britain?
