Lara Stone ad pulled after ‘gang rape’ complaints
Naughty adverts suit my personality, says model. But this Calvin Klein campaign upset Australians
Lara Stone, the gap-toothed Dutch-born model with a reputation for appearing in risque photoshoots, told today's Observer: "I think naughty shoots suit my personality. I don't mind doing a straightforward fashion shoot, but it's more fun when there's something naughty in it."
The timing was neat. For although it would not have been known when the magazine article went to press, Stone's latest "naughty" ad - a billboard for Calvin Klein jeans - has just been banned in Australia.
The government ordered the billboards be taken down after the Advertising and Standards Bureau (ASB) ruled in favour of complainants who said the campaign appeared to condone gang rape.
The black and white photo, shot against a chain-link fence, showed the 26-year-old Stone lying on her back, with her head in the lap of a shirtless male model who is holding her hair. Another man is hovering above her.
Stone is apparently naked apart from a black bra. The only jeans on display are being worn by the men.
The ASB stated: "The Board considered that whilst the act depicted could be consensual, the overall impact and most likely impression is that the scene is suggestive of violence and rape."
Stone, who married the Little Britain actor David Walliams earlier this year, has previously appeared in blackface for French Vogue - a shoot denounced as "culturally insensitive" - and in a short film by photographer Steven Klein in which she appeared covered in blood having apparently executed a police officer.
As for the American designer Calvin Klein, he enjoys controversy almost as much as Stone.
In 2008, residents of SoHo, New York City, protested at a Calvin Klein billboard showing actress Eva Mendez in a near-naked embrace with two men.
Back in 1996, a Calvin Klein TV campaign featuring scantily-clad young models was banned after protests that the ad would encourage paedophiles. Even President Bill Clinton complained about that one.
