Tennis champ meets Mr Right after saying she was looking to settle down
Fans of leggy Russian tennis players in very shirt skirts will be mourning the news today that Maria Sharapova has become engaged. She has fallen for the charms of the 26-year-old LA Lakers basketball player Sasha Vujacic who at 6ft 7in stands five inches taller than the former Wimbledon champion.
Vujacic told reporters before yesterday's Lakers game against the Golden State Warriors in San Diego that Maria had said yes to his "old-school proposal" at his home in Manhattan Beach, California.
"We are engaged and both really happy," said the Slovenian-born guard. "It's good and now we can focus on other things".
Sharapova has made no secret of the fact that she was looking for "a nice husband" and hopes to retire before too long.
Still only 23, she's won 22 singles titles, including one Wimbledon, one US Open and one Australian Open.
It was after winning the latter in Melbourne two years ago that she was asked by a reporter whether she would still be playing in 10 years' time.
"No, no," she replied, "please record this. I think by that time, I hope that I will have a nice husband and a few kids".
She met Sasha last summer at a friend's barbecue. ·
