Kanye West replaces teeth with diamonds in ‘gap year’
After 13 months away the well-travelled rapper returns to the public eye
Rapper Kanye West has given his first TV interview in over a year, talking about the aftermath of his infamous stage invasion at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when he gatecrashed Taylor Swift's acceptance speech.
And anyone wondering what he has been up to in the 13 months since that toe-curling incident will be interested to learn that during his 'gap year' away from the spotlight he has had his bottom row of teeth replaced by diamonds.
West told chatshow host Ellen DeGeneres that his life had "completely crashed" after the episode in September 2009 that turned him into a laughing stock the world over. The rapper was ridiculed after invading the stage at the MTV ceremony and ripping the microphone away from Swift during her acceptance speech and declaring that Beyonce should have won the award for Best Female Video.
He revealed that after the dust had settled he had embarked on what basically amounts to a 'gap year', exploring different parts of the world.
"I left America. I stopped doing music altogether. I just took some time," said West. "I went to Japan just so I could get away from paparazzi altogether. Then in November I moved to Rome and just lived there, and when I came back to the States I moved to Hawaii. I lived there for about six months and just worked on music."
The rapper explained that the break had given him the chance to contemplate his life for the first time since the death of his mother in 2007.
"It was time to take a break and develop more as a person, as a creator and focus more on my thoughts and my ideas and what I wanted to bring to the world," said West, echoing the sentiments of thousands of others who take time out to go travelling.
But while most gap year students return home with some local carvings and a lot of photographs, West has a rather different memento of his time away - a set of diamond teeth.
Showing off his glistening gnashers the rapper said that his dentist had actually removed the teeth from his bottom jaw and replaced them with gold and diamond implants.
He told DeGeneres: "I just thought that diamonds were cooler... I guess there's just certain things that rock stars are supposed to do." ·

Kanye West is a self-centered, mean, untalented asshole, determined to draw attention to his ignorant self, as shown in what he cruelly did to the far more talented Taylor Swift at the
CMA Awards, where she won 5 major awards, including Entertainer of the Year, and he, deservedly, won nothing!
Installing diamonds in his teeth isn't surprising. Only a typical
show-off example of his collosal, unwarrented ego! That kind of money could have been better spent to help deprived children to a decent education in their neighborhood, so they don't grow up like Kanye West.
Kanye West is a jerk. I hope his career takes a nose dive and we don't have to hear from this jerk ever again. I know that's not going to happen. In America these days, it seems the more outrageous you are, the more you're rewarded for it. While good, honest, talented and hard-working people struggle, morons like Kanye West prosper. How sad.
