US campus in uproar as student’s sex list goes viral

Students at a university in North Carolina are in uproar after a highly detailed 'fuck list' made by a recent graduate went viral across the internet.

Karen Owen, 22, who graduated from Duke University this year, had put together a 42-page Power Point presentation detailing the sexual methods of 13 campus athletes she had slept with.

Back in May, Owen sent her mock thesis, entitled 'An Education Beyond the Classroom: Excelling in the Realm of Horizontal Academics', to three friends as a joke. Unfortunately for her - and the male students involved - at least one friend forwarded the document to others and the 'fuck list' went viral.

This week it turned up on the websites Deadspin and  Jezebel and, as of yesterday, was still spreading across the internet via Twitter. Inevitably, Owen has reportedly been contacted about possible film and book deals by an editor at HarperCollins and an agent at the movie talent agency William Morris.

Yesterday Owen demanded that Deadspin remove the names of the men - who include seven current members of the university lacrosse team - mentioned in the document. The website complied, as well as printing a transcript of Owen's email. In it she said: "As the ashamed author of this slide show, I am horrified at your choice to include all the names that you did. While I cannot stop you from publishing it, this item was never meant to be seen outside of a very small circle of people.

"Obviously, it has gone viral. However, your inclusion of the real names are causing this awful situation to escalate even further and is actually starting to affect peoples' lives in ways that go far beyond mere embarrassment."

In her only interview so far, Owen told Jezebel that she regretted the presentation "with all my heart. I would never intentionally hurt the people that are mentioned on that". She also pointed out that college fraternities - mostly male - make such lists all the time.

As Jezebel journalist Irin Carmon notes, many of Owen's musings are humorous and even self-aware. Sample quotes reproduced on Jezebel include: "My second hook-up with Subject 7 was an entirely new experience for me: a 100 per cent sober booty call".

The outrage over the fake thesis comes just days after another American college student, Tyler Clementi, killed himself after his roommate filmed him having sex with another man.

But as Duke University students join in the national debate over cyber bullying, there is some confusion over who is the victim.

The president of Duke University's student body Mike Lefevre said that people were unsure who to be more concerned about. "Should we be more worried about the young woman's privacy or worry about the individuals who were named?" he said. "It's not so clear to us who was the victim, and who we should reach out to."

Nor is it the first time Duke's lacrosse team, the Blue Devils, have been embroiled in a scandal. Four years ago a woman the team hired as a stripper accused three players of raping her. The charges were eventually dropped. ·
