Anna Chapman, one of the 'deep cover' Russian spies deported from the US earlier this year, is to launch a website to capitalise on her celebrity status in Russia.

In the surroundings of the Starlite, an American-themed restaurant in Moscow known for being "thoroughly bugged" by the Russian security services, Chapman told Der Spiegel: "My website will be up and running soon. The contact information for my PR people will be listed there. I am not permitted to talk about my time in America." The irony is that part of the reason for her fame is Russians' deep-seated hatred of the United States.

Despite a slight hiccup last month, when Russian magazine Zhara threatened to sue Chapman after she allegedly breached copyright by posting photos of a photoshoot for which she had posed on her Facebook page, the former spy is now a bona fide celebrity in Russia.

Tabloid newspapers have published a series of tell-all stories by her former boyfriends and in her hometown of Volgograd, which is considering making her an honorary citizen, the local newspaper is running a contest to find the best song written in honour of Chapman.

Sample lyrics of the favourite to win: "America is spying on everyone, and its enemies cannot sleep in peace. They're looking for bin Laden, but what does our girl have to do with it? Hands off our Anna." There is speculation she may be about to stand as an MP in Volgograd for prime minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party. She would be a shoo-in.

The final proof of Chapman's celebrity status – and, if you will, confirmation that she was perhaps never cut out to be a spy – is the revelation that, "I wear sunglasses and a hat on the street." How about a false moustache? ·
