Reunion nearly didn’t happen after Williams said ‘nasty things’ about Barlow

A reunion between Robbie Williams and his erstwhile boy band Take That almost didn't happen because he had said some "nasty things" about Gary Barlow.

In a radio interview this morning Wiliams said that he had been "very nervous" about meeting his four former bandmates – Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen - for the first time in 15 years.

Williams, whose departure from Britain's biggest boy band in 1995 led to its demise a year later, told BBC1's Chris Moyles that he had "come so close" to cancelling the meeting in Los Angeles last year. "I had toothache that night and I'd just taken a painkiller. I was quite large as well, and I thought I can't go mumbling, looking like Elvis."

Worst of all, Williams said, he had "said some nasty things about Gaz" in the press. "What do I do if I go in, is he harbouring anything? So the missus pushed me through the door."

Happily for Williams - and Take That fans - the meeting went well and led to talk of a reunion. He will now join the rest of Take That - who reformed in 2005 and have since had a best-selling album and world tour – for a tour in November. In addition Williams and Barlow have worked through their estrangement by writing a song, call Shame. It will be released on Williams' forthcoming Greatest Hits album due in October.

As for any more details on Williams' 15-year spat with his ex-bandmates, he says he is "a bit hazy". "It's so many rehabs ago. There's so much vodka underneath the bridge." ·
