LA health department takes over investigation into deaths of Murphy and her British husband Simon Monjack

Ever since American actress Brittany Murphy and her British husband Simon Monjack died within five months of each other, in the same house and of the same causes, Hollywood has been rife with rumours that prescription drugs might have played a part in the couple's deaths.

But the ongoing investigation has taken a surprising turn with the revelation that both of them might have killed them by mould poisoning.

Although mould came up early in the investigation into the couple's death, it was not considered a contributing factor and the theory was quickly dropped.

But after last week’s inquest established that 39-year-old Monjack died of pneumonia, just like Murphy, mould poisoning is being seen as "highly relevant" according to TMZ.com, and the Los Angeles Department of Public Health has taken over the investigation.

Mould can build up behind wallpaper and beneath carpets over a period of years. (Murphy and Monjack's home in the Hollywood Hills was previously owned by Britney Spears.) Mould poisoning can cause rashes and flu-like symptoms and, in extreme cases, neurological damage and even death.

Before his own death, Monjack blamed Warner Bros for bringing on his 32-year-old wife's fatal heart attack after the studio fired her from Happy Feet 2. He threatened to sue the company for wrongful death.

Murphy and Monjack are buried side by side at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, the same cemetery where Michael Jackson is interred. ·
