Wimbledon awaits Robson after ‘sluts’ put-down
‘They go with every guy and make a bad name for themselves’ says Robson of her fellow pros
With three weeks to go before Wimbledon starts, what sort of reception is the young English player Laura Robson going to receive in the dressing-room if she gets a wild card entry, as everyone expects?
The 16-year-old used an interview in Vogue magazine to say that some of her female rivals were "sluts". Over the weekend, she claimed her remark was taken out of context, but she still has some explaining to do.
"Some of the tennis girls, they're sluts," she told Vogue. "They go with every guy and make a bad name for themselves. You don't want to be known for stuff like that. You want to be more discreet."
As if that wasn't enough, she used the interview to make out that she herself is miss goody two-shoes, always tucked up in bed by 10 pm and "not interested" in visiting nightclubs. "My coach knows I'm sensible. I don't like the taste of alcohol and I hate smoke."
Robson is training at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Paris. She has not taken part in the French Open so that she can concentrate on her grass game for Wimbledon.
In her debut last year, she came agonisingly close to causing a first-round upset before being beaten by the Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova. Since then, she has enjoyed success partnering Andy Murray in the Hopman Cup in Australia. They made it all the way to January's final before losing to Spain.
There was one crime she owned up to in her Vogue interview: dancing to a Miley Cyrus song in her underwear with her best friend, the Canadian player Eugenie Bouchard, both girls sporting Adidas pants on their heads. ·
