An old clip from the cheeky Channel 4 show Eurotrash, which showed Carla Bruni giving viewers the German and Italian for "Put your finger in my bottom", has been removed from YouTube overnight.

While Nicolas Sarkozy has been relaxed about nude photos appearing in public from his wife's past as a supermodel, the emergence of the video is understood to have caused acute embarrassment at the Elysee Palace.

The clip dates back to 1996, when the show, presented by Antoine de Caunes and the Parisian designer Jean Paul Gaultier, was a regular late-night event on C4. Bruni was then a 28-year-old model, sporting long blonde hair, and was introduced as "Italy's most elegant export".

She came into the studio carrying copies of the Hot International love and sex guides, available in seven European languages. The guides were useful, she said, because everyone was travelling so much and meeting new people.

"We must know what to tell them in case we get into bed with them," she said.

Under gentle goading from the show's hosts, she proceeded to give viewers the German and Italian for "You get me very hot!" and the Spanish for "Do you like my titties?"

She then asked "How would you like to know how to say, 'Put your finger in my bottom'?"

As the pink-jumpsuited Gaultier feigned shock at the suggestion, she gave the German and, asked by De Caunes how she would say it in Italian, lowered her voice and replied coyly: "Metti il dito nel mio culo".

To be fair to Bruni, this was typical fare on Eurotrash, which ran for 16 seasons until C4 finally junked it in 2005. Anyone who agreed to take part was expected by the producers to be game for a laugh - and they were not supposed to end up marrying French presidents. ·
