David Walliams marries supermodel Lara Stone
Little Britain star and Dutch girlfriend get hitched in an ultra-conventional ceremony
The Little Britain comedian David Walliams married Dutch supermodel Lara Stone in a lavish ceremony at Claridges Hotel in London yesterday. His BBC TV co-star Matt Lucas was among the guests at a surprisingly conventional ceremony, complete with poignant marriage vows and hundreds of white roses.
The bride wore a flowing cream gown with a lace-trimmed train by Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy and, according to guests, wept as she made her vows. The groom, whose TV fans might reasonably have expected him to be the one in the dress, wore a grey morning suit.
Stone is the the gap-toothed 26-year-old who was more famous for various controversial photoshoots - including one last year with photographer Steven Klein for Paris Vogue in which she blacked up - before she become engaged to Walliams in January. She admitted to British Vogue in December that she had been in rehab for alcoholism.
Walliams has described himself in the past as being 70 per cent straight. However, that 70 per cent has been working full-time: he has had many beautiful girlfriends over the years, including Natalie Imbruglia and Denise Van Outen, both of whom were among the guests at Claridges.
Others invited to the bash included Elton John, Stephen Fry and a comedian from quite a different generation, Ronnie Corbett.
Corbett, now 79, described afterwards how Matt Lucas wheeled in the wedding cake dressed as fat fighter Marjorie Dawes, one of the best-known characters from Little Britain. "He'd taken all the trouble to bring a wig and costume," said Corbett. "It brought a huge cheer.
"The whole general atmosphere was of loveliness and glamour from a day gone by. I've never seen so many white roses, there were hundreds and I've never been to a more beautiful service in my whole life, it was perfect from beginning to end." ·
