Laura Bush has revealed that she never agreed with her husband, the former Republican US president George W Bush, on the issues of gay marriage and abortion. The admission is even more startling because President Bush was a darling of the Christian Right, whose support propelled him to a second term in 2004.

In an interview with Larry King on CNN, Laura Bush, who is currently promoting her autobiography Spoken From the Heart, said: "When couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has".

She said that she believed one day gay marriage would be legal in the US, adding: "It's a generational thing."

Laura confirms that her husband does retain his opposition to gay marriage but, in contrast to his implacable stance on the issue of terrorism, about which he famously said "you're either with us or against us", he does appear to tolerate dissent. "I understand his viewpoint. And he understands mine," Laura insists.

On the issue of abortion, Laura is again very much on the left-wing of the Republican party. "I think it's important that it remain legal, because I think it's important for people, for medical reasons and other reasons," she told Larry King.

Unfortunately King didn't ask the obvious question: "Did you actually vote for your husband?" ·
