Naomi cuts short ‘blood diamond’ interview
Campbell storms out on ABC News as Farrow urges her to testify
Naomi Campbell walked out of an interview with ABC News - angrily shoving the camera as she stormed out - after she was asked about a "blood diamond" she is said to have received from former Liberian President Charles Taylor.
The interview was to have been part of a special report about Taylor's ongoing trial for war crimes in the Hague, which was broadcast on United States television last night. The ABC News Nightline programme focused on the row over Campbell's alleged gift which was apparently given to the supermodel after a 1997 dinner hosted by Nelson Mandela.
Nightline correspondent Brian Taylor had also interviewed the American actress and human rights campaigner Mia Farrow, another guest at the dinner party. She has claimed that Campbell told her she received the diamond.
Farrow repeated the story she told Hague prosecutors, saying to Taylor: "Naomi Campbell came down [the following morning]... she said during the night some men had knocked on her door and she, half-asleep, had opened the door and it was representatives of President Charles Taylor and that they had given her a huge diamond." Farrow added: "And we were like, 'Oh, my gosh’."
Farrow also urged Campbell to testify against Taylor, saying: "Absolutely, step up and do your part."
Campbell, who has not confirmed or denied the story, would not co-operate with Nightline's investigation, the programme alleged last night. ABC News had tried to interview her at a recent fundraiser for Haiti earthquake survivors. The clip shows her saying: "I didn't receive a diamond and I'm not going to speak about that". She then ends the interview by slamming the camera to the floor.
Meanwhile there is confusion over whether Naomi may soon receive another large rock - an engagement ring. The Russian news website life.ru is reporting that Campbell's boyfriend, the Moscow millionaire Vladislav Doronin, has spoken about the couple's plans for a wedding.
It quoted Doronin, 47, as saying Dasha Zhukova - the partner of Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich - would be Campbell's bridesmaid.
Yet the story is somewhat less plausible given that Doronin is understood to be still married to Ekaterina Doronina, the mother of his teenage daughter. Campbell's spokeswoman said in January that the 39-year-old supermodel "was not engaged nor has any plans to wed". ·
