Doctor Who stars Karen Gillan and Matt Smith

Despite rave reviews, the press has set its sights on the young BBC actors’ personal lives

The new Doctor Who hasn’t enjoyed much of a honeymoon. Only weeks after actors Matt Smith and Karen Gillan impressed both fans and TV critics with their BBC debut, it seems the media is already training its guns on the two young stars' personal lives.

Gillan, who plays the Doctor's feisty Scottish companion Amy Pond, is already being depicted as a 'party girl' in the same mould as Kate Moss or Lindsay Lohan after photos emerged showing the 22-year-old on a night out drinking. Or, as the Daily Mail put it: "After weeks of well-styled, sophisticated appearances at promotional events for the new series, Gillan has been caught on camera looking a tad worse for wear."

The "alcohol-fuelled" snaps of Gillan "enjoying a raucous night out with friends" were taken shortly before she became famous as the Doctor's assistant. The photos appeared on the internet over the weekend. In response, a repentant Gillan said: "I think I am going to try and lay off falling out of nightclubs. It's not a good look."

Admittedly the Mail has had Gillan (pictured in New York last week with Smith) in its sights since she made her Doctor Who debut earlier this month wearing a police kissogram costume. While many reviewers praised Gillan's debut performance as the new assistant, the Mail chose to focus on her "almost non-existent mini-skirt".

Gillan has also been romantically linked to her co-star Matt Smith, the new Time Lord. But photographs of Smith, 27, kissing and holding hands with the English underwear model Daisy Lowe at the Coachella festival in California this weekend put paid to the rumours. Yesterday the Sun claimed that the pair had been seeing each other for three months and were preparing to move in together.

Lowe's spokeswoman denied that the pair were dating, insisting that "they're just having fun" and that her client was "young, free and single".

Smith has previously confessed to having a crush on Lowe, 21, when she was seeing someone else. He said recently: "Daisy Lowe's a pretty lady, someone lovely with a good heart who enjoys the things I enjoy... But she's taken so that's out of the question." ·
