John Terry absolved by injured security man

John Terry

But Roman Abramovich is on the warpath after Chelsea players let him down

The Chelsea FC security guard who was injured when his leg was caught under the wheel of John Terry's car on Tuesday night has said he does not blame the Chelsea captain for the injury. And he also confirmed that his leg was not broken, as was claimed yesterday.

"Contrary to media reports I've been reading this evening I did not suffer a broken leg in last night's incident at Stamford Bridge," said Steve Rowley, who is the club's deputy security manager.

"It is badly bruised. John was quickly in contact with me once he realised what had happened and there's no bad feeling at all on my part. It wasn't his fault at all, it was a complete accident."

Terry was navigating his Range Rover through a scrum of photographers following Chelsea's 1-0 defeat at home by Inter Milan when the accident happened. He was later breathalysed by Surrey Police and was found to be within the legal alcohol limit.

The accident came at an awkward time for the Chelsea player, still trying to find his old form following the long saga over his affair with lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel and his eventual reconciliation with his wife Toni.

According to the Times today, he and the rest of Chelsea's highly paid squad now have an angry owner to contend with too after Inter Milan tossed them out of the Champions League.

Roman Abramovich, who has poured millions into the club without seeing the rewards he expected, is reported to be fed up with his players under-achieving. In the past the Russian billionaire has taken out his frustration on his managers, getting through six in as many years. This time, he is said to be standing by his latest manager, Carlo Ancelotti, and pointing the finger of blame at his ageing squad of mollycoddled players. ·
