Pamella Bordes discovered living in Goa
The former prostitute who was at the centre of one of the 1980s’ biggest scandals is now a photographer who collects rare books
Pamella Bordes, the former Miss India who was outed as a prostitute after stepping out with rival newspaper editors and a government minister in the 1980s, has been discovered living a rather different life in the Indian resort of Goa to the one that made her famous.
Bordes, who is now known as Pamela Singh, was a familiar face on the London social scene in the late 1980s and was known as a friend of both Andrew Neil, then editor of the Sunday Times and his counterpart at the Observer Donald Trelford. She was also seen out with arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi and Colin Moynihan, a junior minister in Mrs Thatcher's government and now the man tasked with delivering the London Olympics.
However scandal erupted in 1989 when it emerged that Bordes was moonlighting as a £500-a-night call girl. It was also revealed that she had a House of Commons security pass and had links to Libyan security official Ahmed Gadaff Al Daim. The revelations caused a security alert and prompted comparisons with Christine Keeler, the woman at the centre of the Profumo Affair.
But when the situation blew over Bordes embarked on a new career as a photo-journalist in Africa, India and South-East Asia, and her work was featured in publications including Paris Match, Photo and even the Sunday Times.
Now the Daily Mail, who ran a series of exclusive interviews with her in 1989 after the scandal broke, has tracked her down to Goa where they say she is living in a two bedroom apartment and spends her time practising yoga and pilates and collecting rare books. She is said to be living off the earnings of her photography and is planning to go climbing in the Himalayas later in the year.
One of her friends told the paper: "Nobody knows her as Pamella Bordes now. People like me know about her past but I am in the minority. Pam has built a new circle of friends who are generally much younger than her, so there is even less chance of them remembering."
However, if anyone does want a reminder of the late-80s vintage Pamella Bordes they need do no more than pick up a copy of Private Eye, which in every edition finds an excuse to print a famous picture of her in a clinch with a sweaty looking Andrew Neil. ·
