Elton John: Jesus was a ‘super-intelligent gay man’
Singer risks anger with his thoughts on ‘compassionate’ Christ in US magazine
In an apparently throwaway remark made in the course of an American magazine interview due to be published this weekend, Sir Elton John has risked the ire of the Bible Belt by describing Jesus as a "super-intelligent gay man".
The singer was discussing the experience of lesbians in the Middle East with a journalist from Parade magazine when he made the comment.
"I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems," he said. "On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving.
"I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East you're as good as dead."
Sir Elton also talked about his own gay relationships, saying that until he entered a civil partnership with David Furnish in 2005 he had invariably had affairs with jobless young men.
"I'd always choose someone younger," he said. "I wanted to smother them with love. I'd take them around the world, try to educate them.
"One after another they got a Cartier watch, a Versace outfit, maybe a sports car. They didn't have jobs. They were reliant on me. I did this repeatedly.
"In six months they were bored and hated my guts because I'd taken their lives and self-worth away. I hadn't intended to."
How America reacts to the pop star's thoughts on Jesus Christ remains to be seen. When John Lennon told Maureen Cleave of the Evening Standard in 1966 that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, and the comment was picked up by the American magazine Datebook, religious groups burned Beatles records in protest and Lennon was forced to apologise. ·

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, regardless of whether or not we agree. It is not up to us to judge. Elton John finds comfort in his belief. It is not up to us to take that from him. I am sure we all have beliefs that others do not agree with.
Religious freedom cannot be reduced to freedom of worship, but then with what Elton John saying Jesus was gay is inflammatory, dumb, and more to the point , historically inaccurate. Assuming the Asexual Jesus hypothesis, he didn't care assuming the Mary Magdalene hypothesis, he was straight, and assuming Mary Magdalene looked anything like Monica Belucci, that actress that played the part in The Passion, he also had game! I doubt Elton John needs to sell more records but maybe it's time to retire.
The world needs to care more about love, and less about what rootin'-tootin' Bible-Belt blowhards think. America is an irrelevant country.
Why does Elton think that only gays are super intelligent and compassionate, understand human problems, loving and forgiving. Non gays also have these attributes.
Good on you Elton. If they kick up don't apologise to the religious nutters.
This is disgusting, I am never going to listen to any of his music again.
Nice try Elton, but Jesus didn't die on the cross, he was given narcosis inducing drugs [sponge on pole] which he was later revived from in the tomb away from prying eyes. He left the country with Mary Magdalen, eventually settling in Kashmir where he married, worked as a carpenter for the rest of his life and had lots of children. His grave is in Shrinagar, still cared for by his descendents. The evidence is all there in 'Jesus Died in Kashmir'. http://other9.tripod.com/scr/kashmir.html
