The all-star charity single for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, arranged by Simon Cowell at the request of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, was due to be released to radio stations at 8 am today for immediate play. It well then be released for sale on February 8.

The single is a cover of REM's 1992 hit Everybody Hurts. It features 21 acts including Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus and Robbie Williams, performing with other members of Take That for the first time since he left the band in 1995.

Given Cowell's TV talent show background, there are also several participants connected to Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor. They include Cheryl Cole, Alexandra Burke, Susan Boyle, Leona Lewis and the band JLS.

Everybody Hurts was recorded at Trevor Horn's Sarm Studios in Notting Hill - where the Band Aid single, organised by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for Ethiopia, was recorded in 1984. Many acts who couldn't get to London for the recent recording laid down their tracks at studios around the world, just as David Bowie and others did in 1984.

Gordon Brown has waived VAT on the sales of the single.

Meanwhile, in the US, an album of artists who performed at George Clooney's recent fundraising telethon for Haiti - including Madonna, Jay Z and Rihanna - has been released on iTunes. ·

Yeah, everybody, hurts except Cowell, I'd be more impressed if he gave some of his countless millions, rather than getting plebs to shell out for yet another tatty piece of worthless pop plastic. The contributors could afford to donate actual money as well, rather than a quick warble. Still, fans of this motley line up will doubtless have to have it, so it'll raise a few quid.
