It is bizarre behaviour even by the standards of Dennis Hopper, the veteran Hollywood actor, director, photographer and art collector Dennis Hopper. With only a short time to live, according to reports, he has filed for divorce from his fifth wife, Victoria Duffy, whom he married 13 years ago.

Hopper, 73, announced in October that he had prostate cancer. It is understood that his condition has deteriorated in recent weeks. Sources at the University of Southern California, where he was receiving treatment, say the disease has spread to his bones.

In court papers, Hopper offers to pay support to Victoria, 32 years his junior. But he wants joint legal custody of the couple's six-year-old daughter, Galen.

Friends say he is trying to prevent Victoria from contesting his will in which he leaves her a quarter of his estate, which includes a compound on Venice Beach, Los Angeles, where some of his children also live, and an important art collection.

Victoria is said to be upset that the will allows for only what was settled in the couple's pre-nuptial agreement at the time of their marriage. Given the relative length of time they have been together, she had expected more.

The New York Post is reporting that Victoria has "barricaded herself in" at the Venice Beach property while Hopper lies on his deathbed. ·
