‘Fuck the McCanns’ police chief heard to tell BBC
Outburst alleged as Amaral continues to say Madeleine kidnap was ‘invented’
Kate McCann spoke to reporters today about the pain of having to listen to Portuguese detectives say in court that they believe her daughter Madeleine is dead and that she and her husband, Gerry McCann, somehow faked her abduction.
"If I'm honest, our daughter's been taken and nothing's ever going to be as bad as that," Kate McCann said in Lisbon. "It's still been difficult, it's been emotive, because I know what's in the case files, I know what the conclusions are. So it's difficult to hear something that's incorrect and inaccurate."
She was speaking on her way into the court where the McCanns are suing the former local police chief Goncalo Amaral for defamation and seeking to have a permanent ban put on his book, The Truth of the Lie. In it, he claims Madeleine died in the McCanns's holiday apartment on the Algarve in May 2007 and that her parents faked the abduction story - a claim he and other former officers have reiterated in court this week.
Kate McCann was addressing reporters as it emerged that Amaral allegedly responded "Fuck the McCanns" when he was asked by a BBC reporter this week whether his claims about their daughter's fate might be hurting the couple.
The comment was reportedly "bleeped out" when the exchange was broadcast in the East Midlands region where the McCanns have their home.
Amaral has denied the outburst, claiming he had not even spoken to a British TV crew. But a BBC spokesman confirmed that Amaral had used "inappropriate language".
The McCanns are suing Amaral for £1m, money they hope to use to reinvigorate the search for Madeleine if they win the lawsuit.
Kate McCann attended court today in the company of Fiona Payne, one of the so-called "Tapas Seven" - the friends with whom the McCanns were dining when they say Madeleine was taken from their apartment.
At the end of today's hearing, the case will be adjourned until February 10 when evidence will be heard from two witnesses unavailable this week. Kate McCann said she remained "confident" of winning the libel action. ·

Did he actually say "F the McCann's" or is this another case of biased reporting by Martin Fricker. Seems the rest of Europe could translate it properly as "Fala com McCanns" - Ask the McCanns. Either way the BBC are too shallow to issue an apology or actually realise the unbleeped video which would prove once and for all what he said. This is the most pathetic personal attack to date - well done the British press you've sunk to a new low.
yes there is no firm evidence either way. But am I alone in getting the impression that the McCann's are as genuine as a three pound note?
