Nike stand by their man even though Woods’s wife could promote a rival’s clothing line
Tiger Woods might be shedding sponsors by the bucketload, but his cuckolded wife is on the verge of signing a sponsorship deal with Puma, if a report from gossip website TMZ is accurate.
A representative of Puma, which is a deadly rival of Nike, the sportswear giant that sponsors Tiger Woods, says they are in "internal discussions" to sign Elin Nordegren to Tretorn, the Swedish clothing line they own. Apparently, Woods's wife is a "good brand fit".
Nike has so far stood by billionaire golfer Woods throughout the very public revelations regarding a host of alleged mistresses – and his decision at the weekend to give up golf "indefinitely".
The Nike chairman Phil Knight has meanwhile told Sports Business Journal that the bad publicity is just a minor blip. He said "there’s always a risk" when companies build their brand around individuals such as Woods: "One of the things we always try to do when we have a big endorsement is check out the character and the pattern of the individual. But you’re not going to get it right all the time, and if you’re going to be in the business you have to recognise that.
"When his career is over, you'll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now." ·
