Golfer claims injuries from car crash prevent him playing in LA charity tournament

The annual charity golf tournament which Tiger Woods has hosted for the past nine years will have to do without the world number one this week. Woods, still the centre of a frenzy of speculation over the state of his marriage following his bizarre car accident outside his Florida home, has pulled out.

He will not be at today's press conference to kick off the Chevron World Challenge in Los Angeles, and he won't be playing either. The reason given is that he has yet to recover from the injuries sustained when his Cadillac Escalade went into a tree.

But whatever the facts of what occurred between him and Mrs Woods - the former model Elin Nordegren - in the small hours of Friday morning, the last people he wants to meet right now are a roomful of journalists.

Woods posted a statement on his website yesterday which said: "I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week. I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I'm very sorry that I can't be there."

By skipping the Chevron World Challenge, Woods will now take Christmas and New Year off and not return to competitive golf until the New Year.

In the meantime, the American gossip site TMZ.com claims the Florida Highway Patrol is seeking permission to obtain medical records from the hospital where Woods was treated on Friday.

Police want to know whether the wounds suffered by the billionaire golfer are consistent with a car going into a tree, or point to him having been attacked by his wife.

As The First Post reported yesterday, Woods has refused to talk to the police about the car accident - which is his right under Florida law. However, if there is any real of evidence of a serious domestic dispute, then the police could insist on questioning the couple. ·

I always suspected that despite his obviously great talent at golf, there was something not quite rght about Tiger Woods. It is a shame that he is being allowed to get off not talking to the police and answering what must surely be their legitimate questions. He is very likely living a lie and ofcourse his squeaky clean image is now tarnished; he will be seen in the same light as other sportsmen before him- the ones he would especially like to distance himself from. How ironical is life at times!

Lucky he'd left his 5 iron behind or she wouldn't have been chasing him down the drive shouting "if you keep playing in the rough you're gonna lose your balls".
