Lindsay Lohan’s fashion debut torn to shreds
First collection for Ungaro could be the last for Paris’s most unlikely duo
The Paris fashion debut of Hollywood 'bad girl' Lindsay Lohan has been deemed a disaster. The first collection put together by Emanuel Ungaro's controversial new team - designer Estrella Archs "overseen" by creative director Lohan - was shown in Paris on Sunday to hoots of derision. "Quite simply, an embarrassment", said Women's Wear Daily, which reported fashionistas rolling their eyes and snickering every time a new girl hit the catwalk dressed in too tight pants or too short skirts.
The clothes looked cheesy and dated, according to WWD. "Hot pink, orange and flashy, with an overworked heart motif relentless in its execution, the collection displayed none of the promised younger side Lohan was supposed to deliver."
Then there was the issue of the heart-shaped nipple 'pasties'. "It's not good to show your nipples, so they should be covered," Lohan told Reuters in an unusual outbreak of prudery. Yes, but do pasties belong in the collection of a long-established Paris fashion house - or a lap dancing club?
Some are wondering whether the first Archs-Lohan collection might be the last. But the Daily Telegraph's Hillary Alexander had some sympathy for the pair, making the point that they had been given only three weeks to pull the collection together. Ungaro himself - he retired five years ago - would have spent that much time on a single piece, she said.
"My heart goes out to Lindsay Lohan," said Alexander. "Right now, she is getting a taste of just how brutal the fashion jungle can be when the claws are unsheathed."
One get-out for Lohan would be that she actually had very little to do with the new line. The Guardian reports that while visitors to the Ungaro studio in recent days spotted Archs putting the finishing touches to the collection, Lohan "was nowhere to be seen". ·
