Sarah Palin’s international debut: the verdict

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin

Addressing an audience of Hong Kong financiers, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attempted to throw off her reputation for gaffes

Sarah Palin has taken her first steps into international politics - addressing an audience of financiers in Hong Kong for a reported fee of $300,000. Although the 90-minute speech took place behind closed doors, several audience members gave their opinion afterwards. Surprisingly, given the rambling nature of some of her addresses in Alaska when she stood down as state governor in July, the verdict was largely positive.

One audience member said her speech was "wide-ranging, very balanced, and she beat all expectations". He added: "She didn't sound at all like a far-right-wing conservative. She seemed to be positioning herself as a libertarian or a small-c conservative."

Palin, who used notes during her presentation, talked about economic development in the Asia region and broached the subject of international trade - attacking US tariffs on Chinese-made tyres and describing the Obama administration as "anti-open and anti-growth".

Tweets from audience members during her speech said she warned against a "one-nation Asia", stressed the importance of multipolarity in the region, and said: "We hope for China to rise responsibly."

She even touched on human rights, explaining that the US was concerned by China's support for repressive regimes, such as those in Sudan and Zimbabwe, and reportedly mentioned Tibet, Burma and North Korea as places where China should be more sensitive.

Palin did not abandon her folksy roots altogether - she introduced her speech as "a view right from Main Street, Main Street USA," and portrayed herself as "a commonsense conservative", name-checking Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher along the way.

It would seem she has come a long way in a year. The former Governor of Alaska was pilloried for her lack of understanding of foreign policy issues during last year's presidential race. She suggested she had experience of international relations because "you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska" - but apparently did not know that Africa was a continent. ·

Peter so sorry you fear Sarah Palin may hurt wolves. Have you any proof that she has shot wolves?. Maybe you will be lucky enough to be confronted by a hungry wolf one day, then you can yell for Sarah to save you. I think Palin would be better for the world than you , who is probably "educated" and therefore dangerous, reactionary and deeply ignorant. Your comment shows it.

Myrna Smith, do you really approve of Palin shooting wolves from a helicopter or are you just ignoring that perversion? She isn't just stupid, she dangerously reactionary and deeply ignorant. 'Much better education that most critics'? You're joking of course.

The Press and members of the Democratic party did their best to paint Sara Palin as an idiot. She was set up and her words taken out of context. Now she is wise to what they did to her and can prove them wrong. Right on Sarah, you have more common sense and much better education than most of your critics, not to mention a better resume than the President of the USA who only knows how to be a community organizer and how to read a teleprompter. You could give him a hint or two.

Frankly I think Sarah Palin is a dangerous wack-job who shouldn't be allowed to drive unsupervised.

But all you clever-dick tossers who think the world is flat and printed on maps with America on the left and Russia on the right need to report back to Teacher for Geography 101.

The distance between Great Diomede Island (Russian Federation) and Little Diomede Island (Alaska, USA) is **four kilometers**. They are so close that swimmer Lynne Cox swam from one to the other in 1987, and was congratulated by Ronnie Raygun and Mikhail Gorbachev on doing so. The world's dateline runs slap-bang down the middle of the tiny stretch of the Bering Straits that separates the two islands.

Do your homework before opening your idiot mouth and making yourself look even stupider than Sarah Palin?
