Victory over Jo-Wilfred Tsonga at the Canada Masters ends the domination of Federer and Nadal

Andy Murray saw off Jo-Wilfred Tsonga to reach the final of the Canada Masters for the first time, and also climb above Rafa Nadal to second spot in the world rankings.

No Briton has ever had such a high ranking and it should mean that Murray is seeded second in the US Open.

He will now face Juan Martin del Potro in today's final.

Murray's ascent breaks almost four years of dominance by Nadal, who has been out with injury, and Roger Federer. Both men were at the tournament but went out in the quarter finals.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:Mark Hodgkinson, Sunday Telegraph: "For the last four years, only Federer and Nadal have been ranked in the top two. But, with Murray’s rise, the Roger and Rafa Show is at an end."

Richard Jago, Observer: "The advantage of the ranking is not just one of greater status. Provided Murray does not lose the ranking between now and the end of the Cincinnati tournament next week he will be seeded second at the US Open, reducing the chances of having to beat both Nadal and Federer to win the title."

Nick Pitt, Sunday Times: "It was a gutsy rather than brilliant performance from the Scot but was another significant step in his quest to become the top player in the world. He controlled the first set, struggled with his first service, was broken once on his own service games and finally subdued Tsonga after a tense and thrilling tiebreak. " ·
