Awesome Ennis eyes heptathlon gold in Berlin
British athlete set a series of personal bests as she carved out a formidable lead after four events at the World Championships
Jessica Ennis produced an outstanding display on the first day of the women's helptathlon at the athletics World Championships in Berlin.
She recorded the third highest points total ever over the first four events - 4,124 - and even recorded a personal best in the shot put. With a lead of 300 points only a catastrophic showing on day two will deny her a gold medal.
Elsewhere, Usain Bolt grinned his way into the 100m final, even sharing a joke with training partner Daniel Bailey as they approached the line.
WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:Simon Hart, Sunday Telegraph: "The young woman who feared her career might be over 15 months ago when she suffered multiple stress fractures in her right foot is on course for an astonishing comeback at the World Championships, where she leads the heptathlon on 4,124 points after the opening day – smashing her own record for the highest ever first-day total by a British athlete."
Ian Stafford, Mail on Sunday: "Jessica Ennis enjoyed the best day of her life in the women's heptathlon here, where she finished the day with an emphatic lead and a series of new records, and will wake up daring to believe she is poised to become world champion."
Alan Gardner, the Observer: "Dwain Chambers and Tyrone Edgar advanced to the semi-finals of the men's 100m but British number one Simeon Williamson crashed out. Chambers clocked 10.04sec, a season's best, in winning his second round heat, while Edgar was second in 10.12 in his. Williamson, however, was only fifth in the final heat won by Daniel Bailey ahead of a cruising Usain Bolt." ·
