DNA test ‘proves’ John Edwards is father of mistress’s daughter
It’s the latest episode in the long-running saga of the Democrat and his videographer
Reports from the United States suggest that the former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards will soon admit fathering the daughter of his former mistress Rielle Hunter after the National Enquirer reported this week that a DNA test proves his paternity.
The Enquirer is the paper that has pursued the Edwards case vigorously over the past year and, despite its reputation for telling dodgy stories about celebrities, on this occasion has been proved correct at every turn.
The saga began when the paper reported that Edwards, who ran against Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the early stages of the 2008 primaries, had been having an affair with Hunter, a videographer employed to film his campaign, behind the back of his wife Elizabeth, who had been diagnosed with terminal bone cancer.
After denying the story, Edwards was famously caught red-handed last July by Enquirer reporters visiting the Los Angeles hotel where Hunter and her baby daughter Frances were staying. In a bizarre scene, Edwards was chased around the hotel by reporters and hid himself in a men's lavatory, before being escorted from the premises by security staff.
Edwards eventually admitted the affair but continued to deny that he was Frances's father. A longtime aide of Edwards called Andrew Young conveniently claimed that he was the father. But following reports that Young was set up - and even paid - to take the heat off Edwards, it is now revealed that Young is writing a book in which he will says Edwards is the girl's actual father.
According to the most recent Enquirer report, both Rielle Hunter and Andrew Young have been spotted recently entering a federal courthouse in Raleigh, North Carolina, where a grand jury, sitting in secret, is investigating whether Edwards misused campaign funds to pay "hush money" to Hunter and Young. ·
