The women’s draw at Wimbledon got a much-needed boost of drama yesterday with two upset wins. American teenage rising star Melanie Oudin stunned Jelena Jankovic, the former world No 1, with a brilliant fightback to knock the sixth seed out of Wimbledon. The unseeded 17-year-old upstaged Jankovic to win 6-7 7-5 6-2.

The second upset saw 19-year-old Sabine Lisicki of Germany beat the French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-2 7-5.

Meanwhile the 13th-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic booked her place in the fourth round at Wimbledon by beating Australia's Samantha Stosur 7-5 6-2 on Court Two to set up a last-16 clash with the defending champion Venus Williams.

Yesterday Williams cruised into the last 16 on Centre Court. The world third seed won her Wimbledon third-round match 6-0 6-4 against Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Jon Henderson, the Observer: “A rare thing happened on the lawns of the All England Club – a Williams victory was upstaged by the success of another American who was not called Williams. In recent years, the distaff side of tennis in the US has been a cast of two from the same family. Whether Melanie Oudin, a 17-year-old qualifier from Atlanta, will join the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, on a permanent basis is open to question, but with a blazing win yesterday over Jelena Jankovic, the world No1 at the start of this year, she certainly made an impressive case for being able to do so.” ·
