Jenson Button is pipped at the last by the young German, as Hamilton endures more misery

Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix, displacing British driver Jenson Button in the closing stages of qualifying. Rubens Barichello was third on the grid, with Mark Webber's Red Bull fourth ahead of the Toyota of Jarno Trulli. The Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were sixth and seventh.

But there was more pain for Lewis Hamilton as his miserable season continued, he could only manage 16th on the grid.

WHAT TEHY ARE SAYING:
David Tremayne, Independent on Sunday: "They sent the A-Team, 2009 style, into Turkey yesterday. Sebastian Vettel played the part of Mr T, but he is far from the only one who pities the fools that mess with the sport. Jenson Button was Hannibal, calmly organising everything and loving it when, as so often has been the case, a plan comes together.

"Rubens Barrichello was the rubber-faced Murdoch. And thank the Lord for these guys, because they inject some much-needed grace and humour. They know how to smile and be happy, and right now F1 desperately needs that because behind the scenes the Mosley-Ecclestone Express is heading full tilt towards the buffers."

Tom Cary, Sunday Telegraph:  "The bad news is that Jenson Button’s final, scorching lap beneath the Asian sun on Saturday proved insufficient to secure him pole position for this afternoon’s Turkish Grand Prix. The good news, though, is that the Formula One world championship has just improved immeasurably. The return to the front of the grid of Sebastian Vettel - the only man apart from Button to have actually won a race this season - is hugely significant. Simply put: the title race is back on." ·
