French police, aided by the counterparts in the north of England, were still hunting today for the English entrepreneur Ian Griffin, wanted in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Kinga Legg, in a bathtub at the luxurious Hotel Bristol (above) in Paris last week.

There have been unconfirmed sightings of Griffin across England and he has been urged to turn himself in. A report in the Times claims he has been in touch with a former girlfriend, Tracy Barker, and told her that Legg had attacked him with a stun-gun device.

"He sounded really upset and said she had attacked him with a stun-gun disguised as a lipstick, which she'd bought earlier in the day in Paris," Baker told the Times on Sunday.

She appealed to Griffin to contact the police. "I would say to him, 'Please come forward and tell everyone what really happened.' Put your side of the story - I'll be there to support you."

The body of 36-year-old Legg, born in Poland but a French national, was found on Tuesday in her room at the Bristol after Griffin checked out after a drinking binge, saying she was not to be disturbed, and disappeared in his Porsche 911. At first it was though the fugitive was heading to the Riviera, but then his car was found in Warrington, Cheshire near his parents' home.

First press reports had Griffin down as a millionaire and Legg as his Polish girlfriend. As more facts have emerged, the opposite appears to be the case: Legg was a millionairess in her own right, running a successful company called Vegex which exported tomatoes from Poland to British supermarkets.

She enjoyed the trappings of a rich and successful businesswoman, including a boat recently berthed on the Cote d'Azur and a boyfriend with a slightly dodgy track record as an entrepreneur -  various enterprises have  included a gadget shop and tanning salons - and a taste for fast cars. Before the Porsche, he drove an orange Lamborghini which he boasted had belonged to Eric Clapton. ·
